Chapter 15.

“Thanks. We appreciate the help,” Reed said as he exhaled, lowering his weapons. “Ah, have we met before?”

“She’s one of Diana’s kids,” Max said. “And we have to go.”

He looked back to Adrina. “Your mother is The Huntress?”

“Yes,” she replied with a short nod. “And thanks to your aid, I shall now help rescue old Potter now.”

“How generous,” Max said, winking out of sight.

Adrina followed in kind, leaving Reed alone with the scent of damp earth and something acrid, but the Fiend was already gone. He shook his head, even as he charged into the hall. What could have driven Garibaldi to do such a thing? Did he know he was going to die?

Was he a cultist or a pawn?

Outside, a dozen figures in white robes had Potter surrounded. He thrashed against unseen bonds, the silver strands beneath his skin flaring. The men and women of the Shining Leaves were chanting in unison, broken Latin phrases. Yet it seemed the tall Fasces each carried, all raised high, were the things holding actually Potter in place. Max was calling for his brother and Adrina stood beside him, an arrow nocked.

“What now?” Reed asked. He could shoot them himself, or at least, a fair few and stop the ritual, but despite Aunty’s ‘permission’ being granted, it still didn’t grant him a free pass when it came to murder.

“It will just take one to break the circle,” Adrina said. “And I could burn one of the Fasces with my arrow but that may constitute a rule broken. I am not clear on my duty as I did not expect to see surrogates of Feronia here.”

Max wheeled on her, mouth open – only to fade into nothingness.

Too long on the human side.

And worse, Max wouldn’t be able to return soon enough to make a difference. “We have to do something – these people have no just cause,” Reed said.

“Just? That is not for me to decide.”

Reed clenched his jaw. “They already have Valen.”

Now she frowned, her bright eyes dimming somewhat. “That is not normal.”

“Will you help?”

She lifted her weapon, drew a bead and then paused, lowering the bow once more. “No, I do not think so. Even with what you have said, they are not beasts like the Fiend. I could not raise a hand against those chosen by Feronia.”

“I’m not sure I agree about humans not being beasts.”

She smiled faintly. “Though we have not met before tonight, Reed Lavender, I sense a certain quality within you. You know what do to; simply break one of the Fasces.”

And then she was gone, leaving him standing in the night on the lawn before the mansion, mere metres away from a group of people oblivious to him as they struggled to ensnare Potter.

Reed glanced around the darkened houses. The gun wasn’t precisely out of the question... was it? A single shot to startle them? Occupied houses were some distance away. Just how much attention would it bring down? So far, it was a miracle that a passerby or resident hadn’t come to investigate.
